ANNUAL REPORTS, 1963-2003 (1 cubic foot)
Arrangement: Arranged chronologically by date of report.
Summary: Annual reports to the stockholders of Lenox, Incorporated, and of later Lenox owner, the Brown-Forman Corporation. Included are annual reports to stockholders and, occasionally, annual reports to employees, copies of the Notice of Annual Meeting of Stockholders, supplements such as consolidated statements of earnings and quarterly reports to shareholders, proxy slips and occasionally related press releases. Beginning with 1982, the series is comprised of Brown-Forman Corporation annual reports, with the final Lenox, Incorporated, annual report appearing the same year.
Among the annual reports issued to stockholders are three copies submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission, dating from 1984, 1985 and 1988. Numerous other annual reports are signed by Lenox's auditor, Touche Ross and Co.
Consolidated statements of earnings, succeeded by quarterly reports to stockholders, exist for Lenox, Incorporated, from 1973 until 1981, and for Brown-Forman from 1991 to 1993. Annual reports to employees exist for 1970, 1973 and 1976. Additional supplemental documents include pamphlets entitled Automatic Dividend Reinvestment Service for Shareholders (circa 1976), Comparative Financial Ratios of Manufacturing Companies (1976) and Lenox, Incorporated: A Perspective on Growth (1976).
Included with the 1976 annual report for Lenox, Incorporated, is a ballot and literature regarding the certification of election of corporate officers.
Annual reports for Lenox, Incorporated, are dated according to the beginning of the fiscal year (e.g., the 1972 annual report would have been issued at the annual meeting in spring of 1973, and thus corresponds to a Notice of Annual Meeting of Stockholders letter dated 1973), while Brown-Forman annual reports are dated according to the closing of the fiscal year (e.g. the 1985 annual report would have been issued at the annual meeting in the spring of 1985, and thus corresponds to a Notice of Annual Meeting of Stockholders of the same year).

FINANCIAL RECORDS, 1889-1987 (10 cubic feet)
Arrangement: Organized into six sub-series by document type.
Summary: Documentation of the Ceramic Art Company's, and later Lenox, Incorporated's, tax returns, stock holdings and general financial transactions and account balances.
Stock Records: Arranged alphabetically by document type; thereunder arranged in chronological order.
Documentation of shareholder's agreements and stock transactions for Lenox Incorporated, spanning from 1889 to 1975. In part, the documents in this sub-series show the company's progression from being privately owned to being publicly traded, as well as provide insight into the founding of Lenox. Included in the records are stock certificates (individual certificates and bound volumes), stock ledgers, shareholder agreements, financial and legal certificates, correspondence and various government filings.
There are a large number of documents in this sub-series that pertain to Lenox's initial public offering in 1963, comprised largely of file copies of the paperwork required by the Securities and Exchange Commission. There is also extensive correspondence between Lenox, its selling stockholders, the SEC, First Jersey National Bank and Debevoise, Plimpton, Lyons & Gates (the law firm retained by Lenox for the IPO). One document related to the IPO is entitled "Certificate of Amendment of Certificate of Incorporation of Lenox, Incorporated," dated March 9, 1960. Other, earlier amendments and both the original and copies of the "Certificate of the Organization of the Ceramic Art Company" are also found in this sub-series.
The Stock Ledgers and bound volumes of stock certificates date from 1889, when Lenox, Inc., was established as a privately owned company, to circa 1960, just prior to Lenox's IPO. The Stock Ledgers record the names of both the preferred and common stockholders, the number of shares owned, and the dates the certificates were issued and canceled. Included within the volumes are canceled stock certificates, pasted back into the volumes from which they came. The correspondence found in some of the volumes of stock certificates has mainly to do with the transfer of shares, often upon the death of a shareholder.
Account Books: Arranged by book type; thereunder arranged chronologically.
This sub-series, spanning from 1889 to 1937, chronicles financial transactions of Lenox, Inc. These volumes provide a record of both individual transactions and the monthly reconciliation. The types of account books present include journals, general ledgers, trial balances, a cashbook and a voucher register. Occasionally, adding machine tapes and worksheets accompany the volumes.
The journals provide nearly a daily record of the company's financial transactions from 1889 to 1906. Information on debits and credits to the company such as transaction date, amount, and name of the customer or vendor are recorded. In addition, a large number of entries include a brief description of the nature of the transaction and other salient details.
The general ledgers record debits and credits to Lenox, Incorporated's, accounts month by month for the years 1903-1908 and 1910-1912.
The trial balances cover the years 1914, circa 1916, 1917, 1919-1934 and 1936. There are also two undated trial balance volumes.
A cashbook, covering 1902 to 1912, and a voucher register, covering 1920 to 1937, record mainly deposits and expenses. The voucher register includes a general ledger column that may have made keeping separate general ledgers unnecessary. Payments for special orders by Tiffany & Co. and the John A. Roebling's Sons Company, among others, are recorded in these volumes.
Tax Returns: Arranged chronologically by fiscal year.
Documentation of filings made by Lenox, Incorporated, to the US Federal Government from 1909 to 1942. The company's fiscal year was from July 1st to June 30th of the following year. Included in the records are file copies of returns and other government forms, various schedules and financial statements prepared in support of the returns, balance sheets, worksheets and correspondence, most of which is letters sent to and from the Internal Revenue Service. Beginning in approximately 1937, a great deal more financial information was required by the government, most of which had to do with employer contributions for unemployment compensation.
A number of documents in this sub-series pertain to the purchase of land adjacent to the Lenox plant in Trenton in 1920 and the financial repercussions of the purchase. In particular, these documents focus on tax issues regarding disallowed deductions relating to a devaluation of the property shortly after purchase and to demolition of the original buildings on the newly purchased property in 1923.
Also among the documents in this sub-series is correspondence between various Lenox representatives and the Internal Revenue Service regarding overpayment for the 1917 fiscal year. The IRS does not appear to have reevaluated Lenox's 1917 tax return until 1923, and no further action appears to have taken on the matter by either Lenox or the IRS until 1927, when Lenox submitted an abatement claim for the 1917 fiscal year.
Operation Statements: Arranged chronologically by year.
Monthly statements, spanning from 1912 to 1928, detailing operating expenses such as manufacturing costs, raw materials costs, sales expenses and wages debited against income generated from monthly shipments of china to buyers
Copies of a "1920 Financial Statement" included in the records detail company resources and liabilities, inventories, and loss and gain statements, in addition to operations statements.
Among the 1924 operation statements is a letter to the stockholders, dated August 12, 1924, initially intended to accompany the company's annual report.
Purchase Records: Arranged alphabetically by item purchased.
Purchase record cards for supplies acquired by Lenox between 1942 and 1945. Included in the sub-series are records for the purchase of raw materials, production equipment, office supplies and furniture, as well as the services of outside contractors (with several specific groups of items receiving their own tabs, including forms printed, medical supplies, production tools, saggers, screens and steel). The records in this series possibly pertain to the conversion to wartime production, including the production of Lenoxite.
Filed at the end of the subseries are records for electrical transmission equipment and certain raw materials, such as methyl cellulose, eyerite, calcium carbonate and barium carbonate.
Budgets and Strategic Planning Documents: Arranged chronologically by year; thereunder alphabetically by document title.
Lenox China and Crystal budget summaries and strategic planning documents dating from the 1980s. The strategic planning documents typically include reviews of general financial data, as well as forms containing information on manufacturing and marketing goals, product line growth, evaluations of competitors and projected financial plans.
Included with the general budget summaries is a document focusing entirely on Pomona plant budgetary concerns, entitled "Pomona Operations Review from 1986," as well as the proposed Lenox China and Crystal budget for fiscal 1986.
Among the general strategic plans is a document entitled "Lenox Group Strategic Issues for the 1990s: Distribution Channels," prepared in 1987, which discusses various current and potential china distribution methods, including a proposal for company owned, "first-quality" stores described as Ultima stores.

Arrangment: Arranged alphabetically by drawing subject.
Summary: Blueprints and renderings of various Lenox facilities. The drawings cover production facilities in Trenton and Pomona, New Jersey, the corporate headquarters in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, the crystal production facility in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania, and the floor plan for a Lenox museum at Lenox corporate headquarters in Lawrenceville, in addition to Lenox First Retail stores and department store installations. Included in the series are blueprints, color and black-and-white renderings and photostatic reproductions. The blueprints in this series that depict Lenox first quality retail stores and boutique stores (such as the Lenox displays at Bloomingdales) are entirely the work of the Princeton architectural firm Michael Graves and Associates.
Among the drawings in this sub-series is a property map of the Trenton facilities from 1909. Also among the drawings is a floor plan for the Lenox Centennial Exhibit held at the New Jersey State Museum in 1989.
Included among the architectural drawings are plans, parts lists and operating instructions for a twin puller type circular kiln propeller (originally constructed in Trenton and moved to Pomona between 1963 and 1965) and the blueprints for a circular, direct fired tunnel bisque kiln (constructed at Pomona between 1955 and 1957).

SHAPE RECORDS, 1907-1953, 1956-1973, 1977, undated (4.16 cubic feet)
Arrangment: Organized into four sub-series by document type and content.
Summary: Documentation, mostly illustrative, of the numerous china shapes produced by Lenox. The records pertain to both the form of the finished products and their production in terms of tools used and, in some cases, required production times.
Card Files: Arranged into two sets, thereunder in ascending numerical order by shape number.
Hand-drawn illustrations and small-scale photographs of numbered shapes for various china products, affixed to index cards, together with several lists that plot shape numbers by shape type and style. The shapes, numbering from 1 to 3828, include, but are not limited to, dishes and cups of various types, bowls, platters, pitchers and vases. Gaps in the sequences, in the form of either missing cards or blank cards, appear to represent shapes that were never developed or produced.
Located at the end of set one is a card, dated 1973, listing several shapes used in the production of Temperware salt and pepper shakers and butter dishes, including shapes 1291, 1292, 1265 and 1266.
The lists in this sub-series entitled "Dinnerware Shape Numbers" plot shape numbers according to shape type (dinner plate, salad plate, tea pot, etc.) and shape style (standard, coupe, dimension, etc.). Other lists represent shapes developed for giftware or the production of lamps.
Bound Volumes: Arranged into two sets by office of origin; thereunder by ascending shape number.
Volumes of illustrations and procedures documenting the molding and creation of china pieces. The volumes primarily contain hand-drawn shapes for various china products. The shapes, numbering from 933 to 3807, consist of, but are not limited to, dishes and cups of various types, bowls, platters, pitchers and vases. Most drawings bear annotations, often including information regarding shape name, size specifications, date of introduction and for whom the shape was created, if applicable. Included throughout the volumes are occasional small-scale photographs in place of hand-drawn illustrations.
One "volume" from 1969-1970, consisting solely of a stapled packet of reproductions of hand-drawn illustrations with shape numbers, originated in the accounting office rather than the mold shop or design department like the other volumes.
Among the volumes of shape illustrations is a manual of processing times for models and molds, counted in days, for certain shapes up to shape number 2057. The volume includes a hand-drawn illustration of each shape for which a processing time is given.
Lamp Cards: Arranged alphabetically by lamp manufacturer; thereunder in ascending numerical order by shape number.
Documentation of Lenox China pieces sold to four lamp manufacturers, Crest, Davart, Lightolier and Mutual Sunset, between 1940 and 1946, for use as lamp bodies, pedestals, bases and torchiere reflectors. The documents are formatted as 5 x 8 cards that list shape number, order dates, price per unit, and occasionally order sizes, and usually include affixed small-scale photographs of the shape in question. Also included in the sub-series are occasional sales sheets and correspondence relaying sales or order information.
Drawings of Tools: Arranged chronologically by date of drawing.
Hand-drawn illustrations, mostly oversize, of tools used for molding various china shapes, often incorporating a depiction of the shape that the tool was meant to produce. The drawings include, but are not limited to, tools for molding dinner plates, saucers, soup bowls and butter dishes. Dating between 1910 and 1913, the drawings can be attributed to sculptor Isaac Broome. Filed with them are several inventories of tools.
Included among the tool drawings are several shape drawings, primarily of coffee, tea and soup service pieces, with shape numbers ranging from approximately 800 to 1100. They were originally marked as having been disposed of by Paul E. Hedt.

PATTERN RECORDS, 1904-1952 (4.16 cubic feet)
Arrangement: Organized into three sub-series by document type.
Summary: Documentation, mostly illustrative, of Lenox's alphanumerically coded dinnerware patterns that were produced between roughly 1904 and 1949.
Card File: Arranged chronologically by alphanumeric pattern code.
Hand-drawn, color renditions of dinnerware pattern excerpts on 3 x 5 and 4 x 6 index cards. The patterns, ranging from 1904 until roughly 1947, are depicted mostly as dishes, but also include depictions of patterns on cups and vases. Also among the hand-drawn patterns are photographs of complete dishes affixed to 4 x 6 index cards. Beginning about 1947, the patterns are exclusively on 4 x 6 index cards.
The pattern records dating from 1947 and after exist primarily as photographs affixed to 4 x 6 index cards.
For additional pattern renderings, but in a larger size, see DESIGN DRAWINGS.
Annotated Photographs: Arranged in alphanumeric order by pattern code.
Black-and-white, 4 x 6, annotated photographs of completed china pieces depicting dinnerware patterns. Typical annotations indicate border and decal color and specifications, gold leaf placement, similar patterns, and included patterns (hybrids), as well as the shape number for the item depicted. Among the patterns in this sub-series are photographs of hand-drawn pattern cards and photographs of non-dinnerware items, such as vases.
Filed at the end of the sub-series are special service patterns, including those for the Spanish Legation and the United States Presidential Yacht, both designed in 1949.
For copies of the same images without annotations, consult the PHOTOGRAPHIC PRINTS/Product Images.
Pattern Control Notebook: Entries arranged in sections according to index at front of volume.
Notebook, including pattern photographs and price lists, of patterns in production as of 1947. The price lists included in the notebook, as well as some of the pattern images, are clippings from Lenox catalogs. Also included in the notebook are scattered letters, reports and data tables.
Among the documents in the notebook are a table of pattern codes and their corresponding year of first use, an "Analysis of Profitable and Unprofitable Items," a letter from the Lenox general sales manager to dealers explaining supply shortfalls, a table of price increases and a report entitled "The Attitude of Retail Jewelry Store Subscribers Toward Pattern Distribution of Dinnerware and Glassware."
Located at the end of the notebook are photographs and price listings for several giftware figurines.

DESIGN SOURCES, circa 1893-1927, 1977-1981, 1987, undated (2.5 cubic feet)
Arrangement: Organized into three sub-series by document type.
Summary: Monographs, scrapbooks and photographs used as inspiration for both production dinnerware patterns and (mostly animal-themed) giftware plates.
Publications: Arranged alphabetically by author.
Three illustrated monographs used as inspiration for pattern and giftware designs. The monographs include A Monograph of the Pheasants, 1918-1922, by William Beebe, Festons und Decorative Gruppen, circa 1900, by Martin Gerlach, which depicts various arrangements of plant life and prey animals, and The Passing Show, 1903, by Albert Beck Wenzell, with plates depicting scenes of Victorian Era social life.
Beebe's A Monograph of the Pheasants, a four-volume work, is the only work in the sub-series to include color plates.
Scrapbooks: Arranged alphabetically by title.
Two scrapbook style volumes used as inspiration and sources of possible pattern and giftware designs. One volume, labeled "Early Design Scrapbook," circa 1893, consists largely of images of decorative book covers and title pages, while the second volume, labeled "Children's China Presentation," 1987, consists of images from children's stories, such as Charlotte's Web and the works of Dr. Seuss.
The volume labeled "Children's China Presentation" appears to have been part of a product line proposal.
Photographs: Arranged alphabetically by subject.
Color and black-and-white photographic prints, primarily of artwork, for possible use as giftware or special service designs. Subjects depicted include Native American life, tall sailing ships, equestrian and hunting activities, and wildlife. Included in the sub-series are 3 ½ x 5, 5 x 7 and 10 x 12 color prints, 8 x 10 black-and-white prints, 4 x 5 and 8 x 10 negatives, color slides and several postal and greeting cards, as well as several lists of artwork (some of which does not appear in the collection).
Several images of sailing ships are printed on postal and greeting cards, most of which were produced for the Musee de Marine in France.
The wildlife artwork depicted is mostly attributed to Lynn Chase, whose body of work is also represented in Lenox's "Nature's Nursery" line of giftware.

DESIGN DRAWINGS, 1904 (or earlier)-1989 (9.45 cubic feet)
Arrangement: Organized into four sub-series by design subject or circumstance of creation.
Summary: China pattern designs, primarily for production dinnerware and giftware, most of which depict plates. The drawings were produced by both the Lenox design department staff and by independent artists.
Dinnerware: Arranged in two sequences, alphanumerically by pattern code and alphabetically by design type (with occasional entries by pattern name).
Drawings, original and traced, of patterns for both the borders and centers of dinnerware services. The designs, usually represented only by a segment of a dish, are predominantly floral in nature, but also include wildlife and geometric designs.
The majority of the original drawings are in color, while the tracings are primarily in pencil.
Alphanumerically coded patterns dating up to 1951, and comprising roughly one-third to one-half of the dinnerware drawings, can be attributed to Lenox designer Frank Graham Holmes. They correspond to the annotated photographs and small drawings in the PATTERN RECORDS.
Included among the designs for dinnerware are a limited number of alphanumerically coded patterns used for vases and other giftware.
Filed at the end of the sub-series is a group of casual dinnerware drawings, the design of which is not attributable to Lenox. These drawings, possibly used for market research or for viewing by sales managers, include, among many others, patterns entitled Melissa and Fresh Floral by Mikasa and Company.
Giftware: Arranged alphabetically by design type, product line and, to a lesser extent, by artist.
Drawings of designs for giftware, primarily in the form of individual dishes, dating from the 1930s through the 1980s. The drawings depict myriad items and scenes, including but not limited to, flowers and vegetation, wildlife (especially birds and butterflies), holiday scenes, American farm scenes, and sailing ships, as well as designs specifically intended for children. Among the drawings for dishes are occasional drawings intended for vases and pitchers.
Among the independent artists represented by some of the drawings are Edward M. Boehm, Lynn Chase, Claire Lofrese, Mary Ann Lis and Simon Lissim.
White House China: Arranged alphabetically by client.
Color drawings of designs for White House China consisting of samples for the Reagan White House service and a proposed Nixon White House service, as well as unidentified samples featuring the Seal of the President of the United States. Included with the drawings are several memoranda of transmission and pencil sketch of a design for a crystal bowl presented to President George H.W. Bush upon his inauguration in 1989.
Create A Plate Contest: Winning designs, display placard and entry form design material grouped together at beginning, followed by remaining entries arranged alphabetically by surname.
Selected entries from a contest sponsored by Lenox China and the New Jersey State Museum in which school children submitted original plate designs and briefly described the special occasions the plates were intended to celebrate.

MONOGRAMS AND SUPPLIED DESIGNS, 1909, 1917-1949, 1952-1954, 1959, undated (2 cubic feet)
Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically by retailer name, if present, else (or thereafter) by client or design.
Summary: Documentation of personal, organizational, corporate and governmental crests, seals and monograms supplied by Lenox clients. While some of the documents pertain to individual clients, such as the John A. Roebling's Sons Company and the New Jersey Guernsey Breeders, most were supplied by retailers, such as Baily, Banks and Biddle Co., J. E. Caldwell, Marshall Fields and Tiffany & Co. Included are illustrations of monograms and crests in the form of drawings, tracings, film copies and stencils (metal sheets with pin holes for use with pounce), as well as envelopes and copies of invoices.
Among the invoices are several placed by company treasurer John L. Kuser and his wife for monogrammed china to be used as gifts. Invoices and designs are also present for such notable clients as John A. Roebling's Sons, the Republic of Cuba, the US Department of State and the White House.
Filed at the end of the series is a disbound notebook of crests and seals, with the entries arranged chronologically, consisting of single color renderings (not hand-drawn) of corporate, governmental and organizational seals, as well as specialized back stamps. The designs include, but are not limited to, seals of the States of Connecticut, Florida, Maine, New Jersey and Utah, seals of Rutgers University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and emblems of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United States Marine Corps. Also included within the notebook is a table of standard Lenox pattern codes and names, as well as two pages of illustrations of standard Lenox patterns.
Also filed at the end of the series is a memo pad, dating from 1926 to 1933, containing hand-drawn monograms, along with order information for the corresponding china sets.

DECALS AND ENGRAVINGS, 1904-1981, undated (17.5 cubic feet)
Arrangement: Organized into four sub-series by document type.
Decals and paper engravings, in several forms, used in the application of patterns to china. While the decalcomania process was not introduced at Lenox until 1917, numerous decal templates in this series represent patterns originally introduced prior to the use of decals, and thus many of the dates represent the creation of the pattern, and not the decal itself.
Engravings: Arranged alphabetically by subject depicted.
Prints of bitonal engravings used in the process of transferring patterns onto china pieces. Images depicted include golfers, football players, monks, musicians and colonial scenes, as well as decorative borders. The prints in this series were part of a transfer process, before the advent of decals, which still required hand painting to fill in patterns.
Decals: Arranged in two sequences: alphanumerically by pattern code and alphabetically by pattern name or subject depicted.
Paper-based, color decals used for transferring patterns onto china pieces. The patterns represented are primarily from the post-World War II period, although several decals are present for patterns dating as early as 1919. Included among the paper-based decals are occasional film templates, as well as several photographs of decals annotated with decorating specifications.
Decals filed in the second sequence consist mainly of specialty and giftware patterns, such as antique automobiles, seals of the United States Department of State and Rutgers University, several Temperware patterns, and back stamps for the Boehm Birds and Boehm Woodland Wildlife giftware lines.
One folder illustrates the decal inspection process and offers examples of decals rejected due to defects.
Filed at the end of the sub-series is a notebook of color, mostly floral decals produced by the British firms of Ben Capper, Ltd., and Ratauds, Ltd.
Paper Decal Templates: Arranged numerically by page/plate number.
Bound, black-and-white plates of decal designs for various china patterns. The patterns represented were predominantly introduced prior to 1947, although post-1947 patterns are occasionally present in the final volume. The numerical order of the numbered pages/plates does not correspond to the order of the patterns depicted thereon, with several patterns often appearing on a single page.
The final volume deviates from the organizational scheme of the previous four, with the majority of its numbered plates not in order.
Film Decal Templates (divided into two categories, "General" and "Oxford," each with a separate oversize component): General decals arranged numerically by alpha-numeric pattern code; thereafter arranged alphabetically by pattern name (for patterns without codes), numerically by pattern code (for patterns with strictly numeric codes) or by "steel" number. Oxford decals arranged by alpha-numeric pattern code, numerically by pattern code (for patterns with strictly numeric codes); thereafter by pattern name.
Positive and negative transparencies recording monochrome decal designs for various china patterns. Patterns represented include alpha-numerically coded patterns dating into the 1950s, later named patterns such as Tudor and Venture, specialized china services such as those for the Delaware Fund, Fidelity Mutual, Mutual of Omaha and the Heritage School, giftware such as Lenox's Great Leaders of the World series and patterns from Lenox's Oxford line. Also included among the pattern decals are transparencies of plaque inscriptions and Lenox logo stamps. The decals are present on plastic sheets of various sizes, as well as cut to size and shape.
Patterns introduced prior to 1947 are largely on letter size (8 ½ x 11) or smaller film, while later patterns and Oxford patterns are predominantly on oversize film.
The General category features production patterns, special china services, and occasionally crystal, marketed under the Lenox brand. The Oxford category features patterns created for the Oxford line and includes named patterns (Tivoli, Georgian Court, etc.), as well as coded patterns (i.e., OX72B). The Oxford patterns range in date from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s.

DECORATING SPECIFICATIONS, 1922-1972 (4.66 cubic feet)
Arrangement: Organized into five sub-series by document type and content.
Summary: Guides detailing the general decoration of china patterns and giftware, as well as those for the creation and application of specific colors.
Dinnerware Decorating Guides: Arranged chronologically by approximate date, thereunder alphabetically by guide title. Individual entries within the guides are arranged alphanumerically by pattern code.
Typed, mimeographed and handwritten guides containing specifications for the decoration of production dinnerware. Typical specifications include notations regarding decal and color placement for the various shapes within a given dinnerware set, as well as notations on firing and production times in later guides. Also included in the guides are occasional memoranda regarding company policies and production procedures, as well as photographs. Beginning in the mid-1950s, annotated photographs of decorated dinnerware sets are included for each pattern.
Many of the guides in this sub-series fall into four distinct sequences, sharing common titles, such as "Decorations," "Decorating Specifications . . . Not in Production" (originally titled "Decorating Specifications Covering Patterns Not in Production"), "Printing and Gilding Specifications" and "Standard Decorating Specifications."
Included among the specifications for standard production patterns are those for special china services, some of which are duplicates of entries in the Special Service Decorating Guides. Other special service patterns are represented by a cross-reference to the Special Service Decorating Guides.
Filed at the end of the sub-series is a folder of specifications for several Oxford Bone China and Temperware patterns, followed by decorating shop reference materials, including tables of colors and patterns requiring colored bodies, as well as several handwritten manuals detailing the number of workers required to fully produce specific pieces.
Special Service Decorating Guides: Arranged chronologically by approximate date, thereunder alphabetically by client.
Printed guides containing specifications for the decoration of specially designed china sets for various organizations. Clients typically include state governments and governors, colleges and universities, religious organizations and foreign embassies, as well as groups such as the Colonial Dames. Included in the specifications are annotated photographs.
Many of the guides in this sub-series comprise a single sequence entitled "Special Services."
Filed at the end of the sub-series is a guide devoted specifically to orders from foreign legations and embassies.
Giftware Decorating Guides: Arranged chronologically by approximate date, thereunder by guide title.
Printed and handwritten guides containing specifications for the decoration of various giftware pieces (i.e., collectible plates, vases, pitches, specialty bowls, cigarette boxes, etc.) and lamps. Also included in the guides are photographs.
Included in the guides spanning approximately from 1954 to 1962 are step-by-step manufacturing procedures for certain pieces, annotated photographs of completed pieces and product catalog excerpts.
Color Creation Guides: Arranged chronologically by approximate date, thereunder by guide title.
Printed and handwritten guides containing mixing ratios and instructions for the creation of paint colors. The individual entries in the guides are organized in two different manners, with the earlier guides arranged alphabetically by color name, and the later guides arranged numerically by color code. Also included among the guides are a limited number of interoffice memoranda.
Filed at the end of one of the handwritten guides is a sequence of memoranda pertaining to gold reclamation.
The "Color Mix Book" guide includes a 1954 memo entitled "Standard Procedure for the Application of Enamel Colors."
Color Application Guides: Arranged alphabetically by guide subject or title, thereunder chronologically by approximate date.
Printed and handwritten guides containing specifications and instructions for the application of paint colors, ivory and gold, as well as the application of acid for etching purposes. The individual entries within the guides are arranged alphanumerically by the pattern to which the color is being applied. Also included in the guides are a limited number of design sketches.
Filed at the beginning of one of the handwritten "Gold Print and Acid" guides are small-scale design sketches on tissue paper.

COST ANALYSIS DOCUMENTS, 1946-1961 (.33 cubic feet)
Arrangement: Arranged alphabetically by document title.
Summary: Documentation of production costs and estimated and approved product prices, formerly bound, kept by cost analysis engineer P. F. Cooper and his successor Charles Harris. The documents list cost and pricing information for various products, such as stock and special service dinnerware, giftware/artware and industrial gifts, as well as costs for undecorated whiteware, decals and raw materials. Included in the series are memoranda, internal price lists, cost analysis worksheets, and occasional consumer catalogs and pricelists.
One sequence of documents, entitled "Pattern Price Record," consists solely of mimeographed price lists, without any cost analysis information. The lists illustrate price changes from 1928 to 1945, with the majority of changes ceasing after June 1941, presumably the partial result of actions taken by the Office of Price Administration during World War II.
Scattered throughout the series are memoranda pertaining to china services ordered by prominent New Jersey individuals, including Mary Roebling and Dr. Mason W. Gross.

CATALOGS AND PRICE LISTS, 1891-2005 (11.8 cubic feet)
Arrangement: Arranged chronologically; thereunder alphabetically by catalog title or product coverage.
Summary: Catalogs, mostly illustrated, together with either separate or integrated price lists, intended primarily for dealers, Lenox employees and members of the china industry. The catalogs and price lists, while focusing primarily on china dinnerware, crystal and giftware, reflect all of Lenox's product lines to at least some degree, including lamps, flatware, business gifts and awards, silver hollowware, melamine dinnerware, luggage (Hartmann), plastics (Alladin) and jewelry (Rosenthal), as well as several linen (Lenox Linens by Sunweave) and candle (Lenox Candles by Beeswax Designs) product lines that received a license to market under the Lenox name. Included in the series are catalogs and price lists for individual products lines, "full-line" catalog binders, price change notices, order forms, promotional brochures and leaflets, as well as memoranda regarding the transmittal, revisions and use of the catalogs and price lists. Beginning with 1990, Gorham and Kirk Stieff catalogs are included, filed at the end of each year.
Full-line catalogs, ranging in date from 1984 to 1999, are comprised of binders with assemblages of individual product line catalogs, most of which can also be found separately elsewhere in the series.
Among the Lenox catalogs are copies of the 1891 (photocopy only) and 1897 Ceramic Art Company's whiteware catalogs. Other catalogs of note include the Fiftieth Anniversary Catalog, originally issued in 1939 and updated in 1942, which attempted to chronicle Lenox's 3,000 shapes and 4,000 decorations, as well the Centennial Catalog entitled "Celebrating a Century of Progress," which includes a retrospective of significant Lenox pieces and achievements. Also included are the disbound contents from a loose-leaf volume entitled "Commercial Crystal," dating from 1968 to 1970 and filed with the 1969 catalogs, which lists prices for apparent high-volume commercial crystal sales, such as those to hotels.
Several price lists from after 1986 include a California-specific version in order to comply with "The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986," known informally as Proposition 65. Such price lists are often distinguished by a black triangle and inform users of any Lenox items that contain lead.

DEALER MAILINGS, 1947-1977, 1983-1984 (10 cubic feet)
Arrangement: Organized into two sub-series by document type.
Summary: Scrapbooks and notebooks containing memoranda and promotional information mailed primarily to authorized Lenox retailers.
Scrapbooks: Arranged chronologically by date of mailings.
Scrapbooks, spanning from 1947 to 1964, of mailings sent to authorized Lenox retailers, as well as district managers and school teachers. The mailings are comprised mainly of ad samples, catalogs, pricelists, press releases, product portfolios, order forms and memoranda regarding specific sales and promotions.
One scrapbook, dating from 1962, is comprised entirely of material relating to Oxford Bone China.
Notebooks: Arranged chronologically by date of mailings. Individual items within the notebooks are arranged in reverse chronological order.
Disbound loose-leaf notebooks, spanning from 1963 to 1984, of mailings sent to authorized Lenox retailers. The mailings consist of promotional literature and brochures, annual reports, catalogs, price lists, ad copies and samples, and retail displays, as well as memoranda regarding specific sales and promotions, supply issues and district sales managers. Product lines covered by the mailings include giftware, executive gifts and awards, dinnerware and occasional mentions of Lenox's own brand of dishwasher detergent.
Two notebooks, covering 1983 and 1984, contain significant amounts of interoffice memos (some of which are simply addressed to "Distribution" or "China Distribution List") and memos to district managers, which were not included in previous years' notebooks. One of the two notebooks is also arranged by topic rather than chronologically.
Two notebooks, spanning from 1965 to 1967, are dedicated solely to crystal.
Filed at the end of the sub-series are mailings, spanning from 1965 to 1984, devoted to particular product lines such as jewelry, giftware and cookware, as well as to the Incentive Division and several denoted as national account mailings.

SALES CONFERENCE AND DISTRICT MANAGER FILES, 1959-1997 (2.45 cubic feet)
Arrangement: Organized into four sub-series by document type.
Summary: Guides, mostly disbound, containing merchandizing information, policies and aids for district sales managers.
National Sales Conference Books: Arranged chronologically by date of the sales meetings.
Unbound books of merchandizing information for distribution at Lenox national, and occasionally regional, sales conferences and meetings. The sales books, spanning from 1968-1978 and 1989-1997, include descriptions of new products and patterns, advertising campaigns, training programs, product specific promotions, display units, promotional films and consumer demographics, as well as product photographs and samples of order forms and pamphlets. Beginning in 1994, the sales books also cover Kirk Stieff, Gorham and Dansk, and exhibit a more tabular emphasis.
Books from 1996 and 1997 include supplemental books comprised entirely of program notification forms for various sales programs. Several other books, from 1976, are the personal copies of national field sales manager Chuck Thompson; they include heavy annotation, handwritten notes and other non-distributed information such as expense reports, hotel reservations and meal information.
Among the books are several that are subsidiary specific, including books for Kirk Stieff (circa 1990) and Hartmann Luggage (1991 and 1995).
Merchandising and Sales Aids: Arranged chronologically by distribution date.
Unbound books of sales aids, spanning from 1959 to 1996, for distribution to district sales managers. The books, which primarily cover china dinnerware, giftware and crystal, are comprised of mixtures of price lists, product and service pamphlets, radio advertisement scripts, advertisement mats, product and display photographs, catalogs and order forms for the various sales aids, as well as instructional memoranda.
Among the books are several that are product line specific, including one that exclusively covers Temperware (1972) and one for the Lenox Classics line of collectible figurines (1996). One other book, from 1982, is promotion specific, relating only to bridal fairs.
Sales Policy Manuals: Arranged chronologically by date of issuance.
Unbound manuals, primarily from 1987, detailing Lenox sales policies. The manuals include sections on company history, marketing policies (with sample forms such as the application for authorization to sell Lenox products), marketing data, advertising guidelines (such as guidelines on newspaper advertisements and how to respond to customer correspondence) and standard procedures and reports (such as for travel expenses and company supplied vehicles). Included with the manuals are the index from a 1968 policy manual and a single page insert from a 1991 manual.
Records of Sales and Potentials: Arranged alphabetically by title.
Records, formerly bound, of figures for actual sales to local retailers (1962) and sales potentials for dinnerware, giftware, Oxford and crystal (1962 and 1966-1968), both organized by sales district. Included are spreadsheets, smaller format sales figure tables and occasional memoranda. Although centrally-housed copies, the records represent data that would have been distributed to district managers.
District Specific Documents: Arranged alphabetically by district name.
Market studies, primarily of the bone china market, drafted for specific retailers. The studies, dating from circa 1968, were drafted for Broer-Freeman Company and Lasalle and Koch Company of Toledo, Ohio, J. W. Knapp of Lansing, Michigan, and Wright Kay and Company and J. L. Hudson Company of Detroit, Michigan, all from sales district twenty-four, as well as two studies for Bamberger's in 1975 and 1978. Included are market studies, miscellaneous pages from other district reports and a set of page dividers from a report for the west coast sales district.
The reports for Bamberger's relate to general profitability and sales growth, rather than focusing specifically on the bone china market.
