Army of Northern Virginia-  Confederate Army in the eastern theater commanded by Robert E. Lee 1862_1865

Army of the Potomac- Union Army in the eastern theatre tasked with the dual missions of capturing Richmond the Confederate capital and protecting Washington the Union capital.

Bounty: a bonus given for enlisting in the army

Concubine:

Cavalry: soldiers fighting on horseback, the eyes of the infantry

Debased: lessened in value

Divine Providence :the intervention of a higher power

Heathen: one who does not believe in God, pagan

Infantry: soldiers fighting on foot

KIA: Killed in Action

Relinquish: to give up, to cede

Secession- the act of leaving the union, to dissolve a contract

Secessionist States- the eleven states forming the Confederate States of America

Smite: to hit, to strike a blow

Union States- states remaining loyal to the Union 1861-1865
