Biographical Sketch of Richard P. McCormick

Richard P. McCormick began his career at Rutgers as an undergraduate student in 1934, and contributed to Rutgers in a number of ways. McCormick served Rutgers as Professor of History, University Historian, Dean of Rutgers College, and distinguished alumnus. McCormick's relationship with Rutgers, which continued beyond his retirement, is documented throughout the collection.

As a historian, McCormick focused his research and writing on the history of New Jersey, the history of Rutgers University, and the broader scope of American political history. He was affiliated with, and active in, numerous national historical and professional organizations, including the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, and the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission. He was not only affiliated and active in many New Jersey historical organizations, but he was instrumental in the establishment of several, including the New Jersey Historical Commission, the New Jersey State Historical Records Advisory Board, and the New Jersey Tercentenary Commission. His longtime relationship with the New Jersey Historical Society, which is reflected in the collection, dates back to his involvement in the revitalization of the Historical Society and as President of the Society beginning in 1950.

A prolific writer of history, McCormick was the published author of nine books, more than forty articles, and a number of guides, pamphlets, and reports. McCormick spoke frequently on the topics of New Jersey and American political history, and the collection is enriched by a large number of speech outlines and drafts, and the correspondence related to those speaking engagements.

The following chronology lists the highlights of the career of Richard P. McCormick. For a more detailed biographical account, see Michael Birkner's introductory essay in McCormick of Rutgers: Scholar, Teacher, Public Historian (2001), as well as the oral history interviews conducted with McCormick that follow Professor Birkner's introduction.

Scope and Content Note

The Richard P. McCormick Papers consist of approximately 40 cubic feet of personal papers created and collected by McCormick. The papers are housed in ninety-five manuscript boxes, two index card boxes, and three flat (oversized) boxes. The collection spans the years between 1929 and 2006, but the bulk of the materials falls between 1940 and 1997. The papers contain correspondence, manuscripts of published and unpublished books and publications, manuscripts of speeches and speech outlines, research materials, articles and reviews, teaching materials, engagement calendars, class roll books, photographs, ephemera, newspaper clippings, notebooks, certificates, and diplomas.

The collection is divided into series groupings based on their topics. The series are organized into subseries, several of which are further arranged into sub-subseries, and then arranged alphabetically, chronologically, or both.

The Biographical/Personal series, is divided into four subseries, and covers a broad span of time, 1929 to 2006. However, the bulk of the material falls within the years 1934 through 1990. The series documents McCormick's personal and professional life both inside and outside Rutgers, and includes clippings and photos collected by McCormick himself. The Correspondence series is divided into three subseries, and consists of letters and materials received from other historians, university faculty and staff, politicians, and family members. The correspondence covers the years between 1945 and 2001, with the bulk between 1949 and 1992. At certain times, the three subseries are similar in content and subject matter regardless of the nature of the correspondence, whether it is personal or professional.

The Speaking Engagements series is divided into four subseries that document McCormick's participation at a variety of speaking engagements, including college and university graduation ceremonies, local history group events, and regional and national history colloquia and symposia. The series covers the period 1947 to 1998, and it often provides supplemental information regarding McCormick's research interests or professional affiliations at the time of the speaking engagements. Other speech materials may be found within other series, such as in the material from his travel to Japan in 1983 (located in the "Biographical/Personal" series) and in his research on New Jersey and the Federal Constitution (Box 25, Folders 10 and 11 in the "Research" series).

The Research series is divided into three subseries—two of which are further subdivided into sub-subseries—dating from the 1950s to the late 1990s. The series documents McCormick's research interests in the history of Rutgers, New Jersey, and American political history in general. When combined with the manuscript material from the Writings and Manuscripts series (1940-1997), and the class lecture notes and research from the Teaching Materials series (1947-1977), McCormick's prolific research, writing, and teaching career demonstrate his influence on students, scholars and historians, as the topics range from specific to wide-ranging and they cover a large number of years. McCormick's impact on other historians is also documented in the collection of reviews of his works in the Historians' Reviews of McCormick's Works series (1959-1995).

The Rutgers University Files are divided into three subseries, and cover the period of McCormick's professional career at Rutgers, 1948 to 1995, with the bulk falling between 1963 and 1986. Throughout his professional tenure at Rutgers (as University Professor and University Historian) and beyond (as Emeritus Professor of History), McCormick was highly active in university and faculty committees, as well as in university organization and activities, many of which impacted the day-to-day organization and function of the university (e.g., Joint Commission on University Governance, Coeducation Committee, College of Arts and Sciences Subcommittee of the University Committee on Personnel Procedures).

McCormick's involvement was not limited to Rutgers. The Professional Affiliations and Historical Organizations series documents the roles he played in a number of New Jersey and national historical/professional associations and organizations from 1947 to 2001. This series consists of correspondence, meeting minutes and agendas, and other material; it documents the relationships he developed with the historians, politicians, and other members of the groups, as well as his level of involvement with each group.

There are five series that further document McCormick's professional affiliations with other historical associations dating back to the late 1940s. These include the American Historical Association series, (1947-1977, bulk 1960-1974) the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission series, (1968-1976) the New Jersey Historical Commission series, (1960, 1966-1985) the New Jersey Historical Society series, (1950-1951, 1960-1993) and the Organization of American Historians series (1968-1974). McCormick's association with each group ranged from general membership and annual involvement to more significant and day-to-day relationships with them.

The Calendar/Calendar Sheets series covers the years between 1951 and 1995, and is one of the most exhaustive of the series in terms of its continuous documentation of McCormick's daily activities and appointments.

The next series, Photographs, (1938-1990s) consists of a variety of photographs related to McCormick's personal and professional life, including photos from his Biographical/Personal Files and his trip to Fukui, Japan in 1983.

The Student, Faculty, and Alumni Papers series dates from 1947 to 1977, and the series functions as a record of the impact McCormick had on his students through their choices of research topics and the comments provided by him in response to their research papers.

Lastly, the Voting Data, Oversized Material, and Census Data series contains a manuscript box with two volumes of state-by-state voting data used by McCormick in his studies including "Suffrage Classes and Party Alignments" and The Second American Party System. The Oversized Material consists of calendar sheets, ephemera, maps, newsletters, certificates and diplomas, and a photograph. The index card boxes contain cards with data pertaining to the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses. These were used as part of McCormick's 1971 Junior Honors Seminar.

Richard P. McCormick Papers (R-MC 050), Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries.

Acquisition and Processing Note

The Richard P. McCormick Papers were accessioned by Special Collections and University Archives at different intervals, and before final processing the collection amounted to 43 cubic feet. Early material was received from Richard P. McCormick on December 4, 1969, and included manuscript drafts, galley proofs and page proofs for The Second American Party System.

The next accession of papers (13 cubic feet) was received prior to 1985, and processing (arrangement and description) was completed by Gayle Mason in August 2, 1985. Three more feet of records were accessioned in May 1987, and processing was completed by Joseph Klett, Laura McBride, and Maxine Lurie between 1987 and 1989.

In the Spring of 1998, Professor McCormick donated 25 additional feet of files. The entire collection was combined, arranged and described between January and June 2002. The most recently accessioned boxes were initially surveyed, then rehoused, and arranged/described according to series by Melinda Zack. When original order could be identified, it was maintained. Otherwise, an order had to be imposed on the collection. Many of the series developed out of those previously established by the original processors, as well as those conceptually laid out according to McCormick's filing order, as best it could be discerned. The series were then organized into subseries, some into sub-subseries, and further arranged alphabetically or chronologically. A draft finding aid was completed by Melinda Zack and the final donation of material by Professor McCormick was interfiled by Alexandra Rimer and Alex Addison, who updated the finding aid during the Fall of 2003. The final version of the finding aid has been reviewed and edited by Thomas J. Frusciano, University Archivist, Erika Gorder, Associate University Archivist, Fernanda Perrone, Archivist and Head, Exhibitions Program, Caryn Radick, Archivist, and Professor McCormick. An electronic version of the Guide has been prepared by Alex Addison, Caryn Radick, and Thomas J. Frusciano.

Detailed Description of the Papers/Container List

This section provides descriptions of the materials found within each series. Each series description is followed by a container list, which gives the titles of the folders and their locations in the numbered boxes that comprise this collection.

I. Biographical/Personal 1929-2003, bulk 1934-1990
Arrangement: This series is divided into four subseries: A. Personal Files, B. School Materials (Undergraduate and Graduate Course Work), C. Travel, and D. Faculty Biographical Files. The series are arranged alphabetically or chronologically.
Summary: The "Certificates, Diplomas, and Prizes" file includes McCormick's Elementary School (1929) and High School (1933) diplomas, as well as various prizes and awards, such as his award of Phi Beta Kappa (March 23, 1938), the Rutgers University Certificate/Award Letter "R" for Debating Team (May 12, 1938), the Award of Merit from the New Jersey Historical Society (1960), and the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindbeck Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching at Rutgers (1964). The Voting Data, Oversized Material, and Census Data series (Series XVIII), contains McCormick's undergraduate (A.B., Rutgers, 1938) and graduate (A.M., Rutgers, 1940 and Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania, 1948) diplomas (Box 96).
The "Clippings" and "Personal Data" files are titled according to McCormick's original filing, and contain biographical and related items that McCormick collected about himself. The "Rutgers College Class of 1938" file contains the 50th Reunion booklet/program for the Class in 1988, as well as speech notes from the event. Also included in the folder are McCormick's notes from the event overall, as well as the reunion booklet for the Class of 1938's 60th reunion.
The subseries "School Materials" includes material from McCormick's undergraduate and graduate course work at Rutgers and the University of Pennsylvania. The undergraduate material is arranged chronologically from McCormick's freshman to senior years, and contains his lecture notes from such classes as Contemporary Civilization (Professor Heald, 1934-1935), European History (Professor Burns, 1935-1936), Recent American History (Professor Kull, 1936-1937), and American Foreign Relations (Professor Ellis, 1937-1938). The "Faculty, General" files contain newsletter articles and Rutgers News Service bulletins written by or about McCormick, as well as memoranda and correspondence between McCormick and various Rutgers personnel. Materials of note in the Faculty, General files are those from 1948 that document McCormick's appointment as University Historian for Rutgers. Also of special note in the "Clippings'" files is material from 1968 that documents how McCormick "solved" the puzzle of how General Cornwallis and his troops were led up the Palisades at Closter, New Jersey, November 20, 1776.

II. Correspondence, 1945-2001, bulk 1949-1992
Arrangement: This series is divided into three subseries as filed by McCormick: A. General Correspondence, B. General Correspondence: Personal, and C. College Correspondence. The series are arranged chronologically. The separation of subseries into General Correspondence, General Correspondence—Personal, and College Correspondence was taken from McCormick's own filing system, however, at times, it seems as though items not of a personal nature were misfiled. This can be seen in the gaps in dates between the General Correspondence and General Correspondence: Personal folders, and the seeming lack of General Correspondence between 1974 and 1982. In terms of arrangement, the General Correspondence subseries mostly has the correspondents' letters located after, but not clipped to, McCormick's responses to those letters, as they were originally found.
Summary: The correspondence in the following three subseries contains material of a professional as well as personal nature.
The "General Correspondence" subseries contains correspondence related to McCormick's professional relationships and activities both inside and outside Rutgers. Some correspondence of note is found in the folder "December 1960-June 1961," which contains letters from Rutgers professors Warren Susman, Henry Winkler, and L. Ethan Ellis, written to McCormick while he was at Cambridge on a Fulbright award, during 1960 and 1961. The subject of the letters pertain to bureaucratic shuffling and related complaints and concerns of the professors in the History Department. Other important correspondents include Roy F. Nichols, Clifford Lord, and Rutgers President Mason W. Gross, among others.
Included in the early folders of the "General Correspondence: Personal" folders is material related to the beginning of McCormick's teaching career at Rutgers, including letters to and from McCormick and Roy Nichols, William Ellis, Rutgers President Robert Clothier and others.
The "College Correspondence" folders include departmental memoranda, interdepartmental communications, and committee minutes from the department of history, as well as letters between McCormick and members of the department and the university at large, including Dean Alfred Meder. Examples of committee communications include those of the Greens Committee—whose concern was the operation and management of the Rutgers University golf course—and of the Graduate Committee.

III. Speaking Engagements, 1947-1998
Arrangement: The Speaking Engagements series is divided into four subseries: A. Correspondence, B. Speech Outlines, C. Speeches, and D. Miscellaneous. They are arranged alphabetically or chronologically. Those folders with no dates or identification, were left in original order and marked as undated (n.d.) on the folder title.
Summary: The "Correspondence" subseries includes correspondence regarding events at which McCormick was invited to speak. Letters to McCormick regarding speaking engagements and McCormick's responses to them are arranged chronologically according to responses. The initial piece of correspondence is located after the responses if they were originally found together.
The "Outlines" subseries contains outlines of speeches, many of which are found in the Speeches subseries, however a number are not dated.
The "Speeches" folders are arranged chronologically and contain copies of speeches given by McCormick on various occasions. See Appendix A for the list of speeches.
The "Miscellaneous" files include various draft versions of "The Imperfect Union" (which was read by McCormick at the Commonwealth Fund and Colloquium, January 29-30, 1970), as well as correspondence related to the event, a program of the colloquium, and informational material about the colloquium. The file also contains a flyer for an April 12, 1990 talk in Newark on the topic of politicians in New Jersey, as well as his research notes and speech outline. Also included are two folders containing material from the Symposium given May 25, 1982 in honor of McCormick's retirement. The folders include two copies of McCormick's "Comment and Response."

IV. Research Files, 1950-2000
Arrangement: The Research series is divided into three subseries: A. Rutgers University History, B. New Jersey/Regional, and C. American History and these subseries are further divided according to various titles of works by McCormick or by topics of research.
Summary: The research files pertaining to "Rutgers University, 1963-1989," are organized according to publication/research topic and further arranged alphabetically or chronologically. These files relate to several books and reports that McCormick authored, including Academic Reorganization in New Brunswick, Report on the Bergel-Hauptmann Case, which was ultimately published as The Case of the Nazi Professor, The Black Student Protest Movement at Rutgers, and Rutgers, A Bicentennial History. Miscellaneous Rutgers' research subjects are listed alphabetically within their own "Other" sub-subseries. The university history material is supplemental to the research conducted for the history of Rutgers, but was not directly linked to, or specified for, research for McCormick's bicentennial history book.
The files relating to Academic Reorganization in New Brunswick consist of fact sheets, drafts of correspondence, interdepartmental communications from the Provost's Office and various meetings' minutes, as well as faculty memoranda from the Office of Dean of Rutgers College. Items of note include copies of McCormick's "Comments on Federation" (October 9, 1979), "An Alternative to Federation" (October 19, 1979), and "Thoughts on Academic Reorganization" (January 28, 1981).
The material in the next subseries concern the December 1986 Report on the Bergel-Hauptmann Case written by McCormick, Daniel Horn and David Oshinsky. The three Rutgers historians were asked by Dean Tilden Edelstein (at the request of President Edward J. Bloustein) to form a special faculty committee to investigate the firing of German professor Lienhard Bergel from the New Jersey College for Women in 1935. They later expanded their report, which was published by Rutgers University Press under the title, The Case of the Nazi Professor (1989). The research materials and notes include interview transcripts and questions, early personnel information on Bergel, enrollment notes, testimony transcripts, and periodical/newspaper clippings, as well as outlines for and drafts of the report. Some items of note beyond the general information about the case include interviews with Alan Silver, a Rutgers alumnus who involved himself greatly with the case of "clearing" Bergel's name both in 1935 and in 1986. There are also copies of correspondence between Silver and McCormick, as well as between Silver and the other historians.
Research materials for McCormick's 1990 book, The Black Student Protest Movement at Rutgers, is arranged according to the order imposed by the author. The dates and information originally detailed on the folders were retained and listed in the container list. Rather than just focusing on the events of 1968 and 1969, the book begins with the year 1963 and works its way up to the particular events of those years. It discusses the protests as they occurred on the three Rutgers campuses (New Brunswick, Camden, and Newark). McCormick's notes are more than just secondary research, as they also include material he collected as Chairman of the special faculty committee formed to address the demands of the Rutgers College Student Afro-American Society.
Files pertaining to Rutgers, A Bicentennial History consists of research notes, periodical clippings, and notes on secondary sources used for researching McCormick's 1966 history of Rutgers. They were originally filed in small 5 x 8 index card boxes under the following headings: History of Rutgers I: 1824-1906, History of Rutgers II: 1906-1932, and History of Rutgers III: 1932-1966. Also included in this subseries are two folders whose original headings were "Chapter I" and "Chapter II," and they also consist of research notes and material (either photocopies or photostats) for the 1966 book, but they include the history of Rutgers from the Queen's College era onward.
McCormick's research material on other Rutgers' topics is arranged according to subject. Included in the folders is material on the Heimlich-Finley Case (1952-1966, bulk in 1952-1953), a significant event in Rutgers' history that involved the University's reaction to Professors Simon W. Heimlich and Moses I. Finley's refusal to talk to the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee. This event significantly affected McCormick, and he was very much involved in the faculty response to the official University position. The material includes the following: The Statement of Dr. Lewis Webster Jones, President of Rutgers University, Tuesday, October 4, 1952 (with attached report of the Special Committee set up by him to advise him on Finley and Heimlich's refusal to talk to the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee); December 3, 1952 letter to Dr. Lewis Webster Jones from the Special Faculty Committee of Review Concerning Simon W. Heimlich and Moses I. Finley (with attached report); the Resolution of the Rutgers University Board of Trustees adopted at a meeting dated December 12, 1952; a January 19, 1953 Memorandum to the Members of the Board of Trustees of Rutgers University from the Emergency Committee of Rutgers Faculty on the Trustees' Decision of December 12, 1952 (with attached statement of the Emergency Committee of the Faculty on the Trustees' Action of December 12, 1952); McCormick's notes on the Memorandum of the Emergency Committee; and the Statement of President Lewis Webster Jones of Rutgers University on the Heimlich-Finley cases, January 24, 1953 (with a handwritten note on it by RPM: "Prepared for release before the January 23rd Board of Trustees meeting at which oral arguments were presented").
The "New Jersey/Regional files" consist of research material on various New Jersey or Regional subjects and include maps, notes, photos, citation lists, clippings, photostats, flyers, speeches, and correspondence. Of particular note is his research on William Whipper (Box 26, Folders 3-5), which was used for his 1976 article on Whipper.
The "American History files" include extensive research materials relating to McCormick's work, including "Ambiguous Authority," The American Interregnum, "Golf for Women," The Presidential Game, and The Second American Party System. Also included are miscellaneous research files on additional topics in American political history and theory.

V. Writings and Manuscripts, 1940-1997
Arrangement: This series is divided into four subseries: A. Published Writings, B. Unpublished Writings, C. Publications and Royalty Statements, and D. McCormick's Reviews of Other Historians' Work.
Summary: The "Published Writings" subseries (1940-2000) is further divided into seven sub-subseries, which are arranged alphabetically according to titles of works, with miscellaneous writings at the end. The series contains manuscript drafts (handwritten and typescript) and other non-research related materials concerning McCormick's writings, such as correspondence and publishing proofs.
The files relating to Academic Reorganization in New Brunswick include the 1978 report, Academic Reorganization in New Brunswick, 1962-1981: The Federated College Plan, as well as supporting documents, such as reports, clippings, and memoranda. One particular item of interest is a typed transcript of a 1965 memorandum from President Mason W. Gross containing his thoughts on an "ideal" model of academic organization.
"Experiment in Independence" consists of various draft versions (handwritten and typescript) of McCormick's doctoral dissertation, Experiment in Independence: New Jersey in the Critical Period, 1781-1789. The Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot files include the two studies written by McCormick during his tenure at the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot, 1942-1944. The first study, A History of Storage and Distribution at the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot, 1917-1943 (Parts I and II), is divided amongst the first four folders. The second study, The Physical Plant, 1917-1942, is in the last folder.
Folders relating to Rutgers, A Bicentennial History include notes and correspondence along with proofs and manuscript drafts (handwritten and typescript) of the book. The notes and correspondence concern publication of the work by the Rutgers University Press, as well as the Bicentennial Committee and the Advisory Committee on Building Names. Note that much of the material in these folders was originally noted with a "P 10" (McCormick's filing system).
The next files contain the handwritten and typescript manuscript draft of the book, The Presidential Game. The material pertaining to The Second American Party System includes McCormick's "Tentative Drafts" I, II, II, and IV (as he originally titled them), as well as his first and second typescript manuscript drafts. Also included are manuscript galley proofs, the indexing set, and index proof of the manuscript. One folder of interest entitled "Shalhope Comment," (Box 44, Folder 7) contains correspondence about, and copies of articles and readers' comments on, Robert E. Shalhope's negative review of The Second American Party System. It also contains correspondence between Shalhope and McCormick, in which Shalhope responds to McCormick's rejoinder to his criticism. The remaining files include drafts and manuscripts of various McCormick articles and writings, including an unbound manuscript of his Masters Thesis, "The War Aims of President Wilson and Congress" (1940). Also included is a copy of his Suffrage and the Constitution (1947), which was written by McCormick under the general coordination of the Governor's Committee on Preparatory Research for the New Jersey Constitutional Convention.
The "Unpublished Writings" subseries (1997-2003) includes three drafts of McCormick's unpublished work entitled "Golf for Women," and the container list details the material contained in each draft according to McCormick's original folder descriptions. Also included is an unpublished manuscript on the history of Rutgers move into "bigtime" intercollegiate athletics, specifically Division 1-A football.
"Publications and Royalty Statements" (1966-2000) include files originally named by McCormick containing correspondence between McCormick and his publishers, royalty statements, contracts and copyright agreements. Also included is a sample cover of The Case of the Nazi Professor, and a significant amount of correspondence between McCormick and Rutgers University Press.
"McCormick's Reviews of Other Historians" (1947-1993) contains tear sheets and photocopies of McCormick's published reviews.

VIII. Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, 1948-1995, bulk 1963-1986
Arrangement: This series is divided into three subseries: A. Affiliations, Programs, and Committees, B. Events of 1969, and C. Subject Files. Each subseries is arranged alphabetically.
Summary: The material in the following subseries broadly cover McCormick's career at Rutgers, from his committee work to his time as Dean of Rutgers College, University Historian, and University Professor.
The "Affiliations, Programs, and Committees" files contain correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, newsletters, memoranda, membership lists, and notes related to the role he played in various university and faculty committees and commissions, many for whom he served as Chair. One of the larger sections of material is devoted to McCormick's role as Chair of the Joint Commission on University Governance. Included in this section is supporting material that provides background to many of the organizational changes made to the structure University Governance and the University Senate between 1951 and 1981. It also includes various draft versions, both preliminary (September 1979) and final (December 1980), of the Report from the Special Committee to Study the Senate.
The "Events of 1969" folders include correspondence, memoranda, newsletters, clippings, meeting minutes, transcripts and testimony of public hearings, and other materials related to the events of 1968-1969, the Urban University Program, the Transitional Year Program, and the Educational Opportunity Fund. The events of 1969 largely concern the black student protest movement at Rutgers, and it contains material dating from between 1968 and 1971 with particular focus on the "events of '69," (as listed on one of McCormick's original file folders). The material deals with the protests and related events as they occurred on the three Rutgers campuses (New Brunswick, Camden, and Newark), and consists of the research conducted and notes made by McCormick in his capacity as Chairman of the special faculty committee formed to address the demands of the Rutgers College Student Afro-American Society. The material also focuses on the development of the Transitional Year Program, which made funds solicited from the faculty available to disadvantaged students (McCormick was Chairman of the Rutgers College Transitional Year Program Fund).
The "Subject Files" include material researched, collected, and written by McCormick on various subjects dealing with Rutgers, including coeducation and the Federated College Plan. The files contain meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, notes, clippings, programs, speeches, and memoranda. Items of note in the subseries are those related to McCormick's roles as University Historian, University Professor, and Dean of Rutgers College, including the congratulatory correspondence he received after notice of his appointment to the Deanship was made public. The "University Historian" file is of particular interest, as it documents materials related to his proposed duties as University Historian and the projects and reports with which he was to be involved, including the development of the University Archives and the University history project.

IX. Professional Affiliations and Historical Organizations, 1947-2001
Arrangement: This series is divided into two subseries: A. New Jersey/Regional and B. National.
Summary: The "New Jersey/Regional" files are divided into three sub-subseries: New Jersey State Historical Records Advisory Board, New Jersey Tercentenary Commission, and Other. Please note that the New Jersey Historical Commission and the New Jersey Historical Society are not included in the New Jersey/Regional subseries, as they are large enough to merit their own distinct series.
The "New Jersey State Historical Records Advisory Board" files include material from McCormick's role on the Board—for whom he reviewed grant proposals and attended meetings—and background material to the board including the minutes to the first meeting of the Archives Series Advisory Board (June 6, 1974). Other items include grant proposals, meeting minutes, membership lists, guidelines and procedures listings, newsletters, and annual reports.
The "New Jersey Tercentenary Commission" records contain proposals, research, correspondence, legislation, reports, membership lists, meeting minutes and agendas, resolutions, photographs, and financial documentation related to the New Jersey Tercentenary Commission. McCormick was instrumental in helping establish and organize the commission, through the help of his friends including New Jersey reporter and historian John Cunningham, and Roger H. McDonough, New Jersey State Librarian, Governor Robert B. Meyner, and Acting Secretary Brendan Byrne. These men, among others including Paul L. Troast and Henry Haines, played a significant role in the growth of the New Jersey Tercentenary Commission. Consequently, their names figure prominently in the correspondence found in this subseries.
The "Other" category contains material from McCormick's involvement and affiliation with other professional and historical organizations such as Colonial Williamsburg, General Board of Proprietors of the Eastern Division of New Jersey, New Jersey Historic Sites Advisory Committee, and the Westminster Historical Society (renamed the Proprietary House Association), for example. The folders include correspondence, meeting minutes and agendas, membership applications and lists, reports, notes, memoranda, research proposals, membership lists, financial statements, clippings, event programs and transcripts, and newsletter drafts and layouts.
McCormick was also affiliated with the Governor's Committee on Morven (1954-1957) and the Drumthwacket Use Sub-Committee (1968-1970), both of which were Governor-appointed committees that were concerned with the future use of the buildings. Drumthwacket was eventually remodeled as the Governor's official residence. Morven—a historic building and property that dates back to William Penn and Richard Stockton—was a gift to New Jersey from former Governor Walter E. Edge. Although it was also planned that Morven be remodeled as a Governor's residence, instead it was restored and converted into a museum.
There is also material concerning the Conference of New Jersey Historians at Rutgers (1948-1949, 1949-1950), which was conceived of and organized by McCormick, Conference Chairman. Historians involved in the 1949-50 conference included William Ellis, Jack Lamping, S. K. Stevens, Julian Boyd, Earle Newton (editor of American Heritage and director of the Vermont Historical Society), Roger H. McDonough (New Jersey State Librarian), and there is correspondence documenting these attendees.
The "National Professional Affiliations and Historical Organizations" files include material dating back to McCormick's early involvement in historical ventures, including his role as advisor to the American Historical Research Center in Wisconsin (for which he was unsuccessfully wooed by Clifford Lord of the State of Wisconsin, State Historical Society to be director). The folders contain the following types of material: clippings, photocopied articles, correspondence, court documents, fellowship applications and program information, reports, research notes and data, budgets, agendas, newsletters, and contracts. The subseries spans a broad time period and also includes significant material from the Thomas A. Edison Papers project, a multi-institutional (National Park Service, the New Jersey Historical Commission, Rutgers University and the Smithsonian), national project involving the organization and publication of an edition of papers by Thomas A. Edison, of which McCormick was very proud.
An item of interest in this subseries is the material related to the Defense of the Rights of Historians under the First Amendment, which became a permanent Joint Standing Committee of the Organization of American Historians and the American Historical Association that serves to protect the rights of historians. The Joint Committee was formed in response to the Stevens-Frick Case in 1965, which involved legal action enacted by Helen Clay Frick, daughter of steel tycoon, Henry Clay Frick, to stop the publication of a book by historian S. K. Stevens that made references to her father. The files contain article photocopies, court documents related to the case, and correspondence between Stevens and McCormick, as well as between both men and other members of the committee.

XI. American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, 1968-1976
Arrangement: This series is divided into six subseries: A. Correspondence, B. Heritage '76 Committee, C. Information, Bulletins, and Supporting Documents, D. Meetings, E. Newsletters, and F. Programs and Reports. The subseries are arranged alphabetically or chronologically.
Summary: The "American Revolution Bicentennial Commission" series is one of the larger series in the collection, although it spans a shorter time period than others. The series consists of a vast amount of correspondence, as well as memoranda, meeting agendas, clippings, proceedings and minutes, studies and reports, photographs, publications, newsletters and ephemera, such as brochures, pamphlets, and booklets, published by the commission.
There is a significant amount of material related to McCormick's membership on the Heritage '76 Committee, as well as on the Commission's relationship to New Jersey and projects that resulted from that relationship, such as the Bicentennial Parks Feasibility Studies and the Bicentennial Park that was built in New Jersey. (For an example of the New Jersey connection, see the Bicentennial Parks Feasibility Studies, Phases 1 and 2, which was removed to the Sinclair New Jersey Collection in Special Collections and University Archives.)
The "Correspondence" subseries contains McCormick's correspondence both to and from people involved with the Commission. The "Information, Bulletins, and Supporting Documents" subseries contains correspondence as well, but it reflects official communications between entities regarding the Bicentennial Commission and its activities. Some of these activities are further documented in the other subseries.

XII. New Jersey Historical Commission, 1960, 1966-1985
Arrangement: The Commission files are divided into two subseries: A. General Information/Correspondence and B. Subject Files. Subseries A is arranged chronologically; subseries B is arranged alphabetically.
Summary: The first subseries consists of correspondence and other communications between such figures as Bernard Bush (former Executive Director of the Commission), John T. Cunningham (future Chairman of the Commission), Governors Richard Hughes, William T. Cahill, and Thomas H. Kean, among others. The general material and correspondence concerns the establishment, organization, and running of the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division within the New Jersey Department of State that was created "by law in 1967 to advance public knowledge of the history of New Jersey." McCormick was a key player in the development and growth of the New Jersey Historical Commission and remained involved with the state-funded historical agency until he resigned from the Board in 1985.
The "Subject Files" folders consist of material from McCormick's various roles within the Commission—former Chairman and general member of the Commission, Chairman and member of the Committee on Scholarly Programs, Higher Education and Libraries—including minutes and agendas, budgets, correspondence, annual reports, and newsletters. Of particular interest is the material on the American Revolution Bicentennial, which contains correspondence between McCormick and John T. Cunningham, Bernard Bush, Governor Richard Hughes and others regarding the Commission's designation as the official agency to plan for the Bicentennial celebration in New Jersey. The documents contain certain members'—including Cunningham's—suggestions in 1972 for the need for another agency to run the Bicentennial event due to a lack of staffing and funding and because the members wanted the Commission to be more concerned with New Jersey historical activities. The above concerns led to the formation of the New Jersey American Revolution Bicentennial Celebration Commission, which had State financing.
