Administrative History

The Transatlantic Review was a literary magazine begun in 1959. It was founded and edited by Joseph F. McCrindle (1923-2008), a former literary agent who spent parts of the year in New York and London when not traveling; he was assisted by several associate editors. The magazine’s title reused the name of a publication conducted earlier in the twentieth century by Ford Maddox Ford. McCrindle’s magazine had editors in both Britain and America. It published a mix of established, lesser-known, and new writers and poets, including in English translations. Also published were interviews with playwrights and theater and film directors; an occasional play; a selection of line drawings (often not related to the text); and some nonfiction. Unlike other literary magazines, the Transatlantic Review did not publish reviews. It did, however, sometimes publish themed issues (e.g., of contest winners or regional authors). The magazine was financed by subscriptions, advertising sales, government (U.K.) arts council grants and Joseph F. McCrindle's personal foundation. It ceased publication in 1977 with issue 60.
